General Big game season - New Zealand

* Rifle/Bow/Black powder/ all okay

* no handguns allowed for hunting 

Big Game hunting season (New Zealand)

  • Late February through mid August each year. 

  • The Red Stag roar & Wapiti bugle period is from early March until the end of April each year. 

  • The Tahr and Chamois rut begins about when the Stags finish roaring.  These alpine species have their best winter skins from late April onwards, with "silvertip" bull Tahr generally available from late May.

Wing shooting season (New Zealand)

  • First Saturday in May through last weekend in July for waterfowl, generally the upland season continues into August

Small game is available year round with no season restrictions

Fishing

  • River/stream fly fishing, 1st October - 30th April on South Island (an excellent trout river spawning run occurs during the winter months of June/July in the North Island's Lake Taupo region)

  • Lake fishing around the general Mt Cecil locality - open year round
